Poetry

As somewhat of a book reviewer, I have to believe that anyone reading this would think "Hey, she criticizes them all the time, but could she actually do any better?" My answer to that is- ehh, not really, no. Writing is not my passion as much as reading is! Nevertheless (I love that word!), I have decided to share some of my poems from a recent English project with you nonexistent followers! YEAH!

This Haiku should be
 about nature or wind but
I find wind boring.

Many poems are hard to write, for they

require too much counting, and the constant
worry that one line contains too many
syllables, or that you couldn’t define
a leaf using enough specific words
such as courageous, masterful, touching;
But how is a leaf any of those things?
That’s for you to figure out, in seven
syllables and three lines, no more, no less,
and it will have to rhyme, ABA is
essential to form a proper poem.
I hate whenever there is a time that
I have to rhyme. It’s never sublime when
I can’t be a mime. You see? Not for me!
Couplets, and doublets, all getting mixed in
my courageous, masterful, touching mind.
I don’t believe that will ever work, so
I will retire from this constraining
process some call writing poetry. It
is too stressful, ten syllables is not
enough per line to express my frustra-

That's all for now folks!

Author Spotlight- Rick Riordan

Mr.Riordan and I have an interesting relationship. He is one of my favorite authors, although, unlike most of my favorite authors, I do not love every book he has written. If you do not know his name you are somewhat oblivious to children/teen literature. This man has written one of the most popular book series in the past 5 years- Percy Jackson & The Olympians, a 5 book series follows a young Greek demigod, named Percy. The first of these books, The Lightning Theif, has been made into a "major motion picture." I could not bring myself to see it, but it didn't get the greatest reviews from my peers. Nevertheless, this series was amazing in my opinion. Rick Riordan has grown to publish two more series of books, alternating in release dates (meaning he has two unfinished series out at the same time). The Kane Chronicles is about Egyptian magic, and you can read my opinions on it below. The Heroes of Olympus goes back to Riordan's topic of Greek/Roman gods and demigods. May I just add that it irks me how all of his books start with "the"? I never noticed this before, but now it really bugs me!

A great start to a great series, The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson & The Olympians book 1) starts out with a boy named Percy who just finds out that he is the son of the Greek god, Poseidon. This makes him a "demigod"- half god, half human. Percy begins to find out who he is, and ends up making new friends at Camp Half-Blood, a magical camp for demigods, going on quests for Mt.Olympus, and battling monsters along the way. I love this book, and I would recommend it to any young reader!

The Sea of Monsters is one of my favorite books in this series. I have only really come to appreciate it now, after reading The Odyssey (Homer). This book mirrors the Odyssey in many of the parts of the quest that Percy travels on. This book is a quest for the Golden Fleece, and Percy has to battle monsters like Polyphemus, the cyclops,  along the way!

The Titan's Curse was not a book that stuck with me for a long time, although I loved it, and the plot is very important to future books, and even future series by Rick Riordan! Percy begins by recruiting and helping two new demigods- these kids are the children of Hades, which certainly adds interest to the book. As usual, a quest is completed, but the main goal of the series becomes apparent.

I loved this book, because it was unlike any of the other books by Rick Riordan. The quest, this time, is for a particular person, and this person can only be found in an underground labyrinth (maze). The maze has many different mysteries that have to be solved by our hero Percy.

This book was the dramatic conclusion to the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series, and it did not disappoint! The majority of the book takes place in New York City (Mt. Olympus headquarters), where a battle is being fought between the evil Kronos's army and the Greek demigods and their help. One thing I loved about this book is that it really tied up, and explained many of the backstories of the minor characters in this book! It was also filled with interesting demigod relationships, and a bit of betrayal.

I am going to be  completely honest here- I hated the Kane Chronicles series (well, from what I have read.) These books begin a whole new series, filled with different characters, and different godly forces. This time, Riordan deals with Egyptian magic, and Egyptian gods. I have not actually read The Throne of Fire, but reading The Red Pyramid was a waste of my time and money. It was written as if two siblings recorded it on a tape recorder, but the only way we know this is that once in a very long while, there will be an annoying paragraph of the siblings bickering. The Red Pyramid was written with a pointless and stupid plot line that nobody could relate to (one of the reasons the Percy Jackson series was so popular, because people could relate to the human struggles). The worst part about this book was that it was just plain confusing! I am in high school, and it was hard for me to understand/follow what was happening at times! The disappointment of this series almost lead me not to read the next series Rick Riordan came out with.

Just notice for a second, that above the author's name, it says, "Author of the best-selling Percy Jackson series", not Kane Chronicles series. If you love reading long books as much as I do (each of these books are about 500 pages yea!), then you will adore this series. The author retreats to what he is best at writing about- Greek Mythology, in this first book- The Lost Hero. It is delightful, because the setting is back at Camp Half-Blood, where there is a new boy there, a Roman hero. This is unsettling for the campers, but he still goes on a quest with two other Greek demigods. It is great because, although the three main characters are new, there is still A LOT of interaction with the characters we already know from the Percy Jackson series! All of the campers are worried, because a new force is being awakened- Gaea, the earth. Gaea is evil, and so powerful that she makes Kronos seem like a blade of grass (sorry, bad analogy). The quest that our new characters; Piper, Leo, and Jason (Roman) go on helps put in place part of the new goal to defeat Gaea. The second book of the series, The Son of Neptune , is written on another side of the country- at the Roman camp. It is interesting, because the author never mentioned that there was a Roman camp in the Percy Jackson series! Speaking of Percy Jackson, guess who is at the Roman camp? You guessed it! Percy also goes with two roman campers- Frank and Hazel, to Alaska to help stop Gaea's rise! It seems as though the two books are unrelated, until the very end, where the campers will meet. Unfortunately, the book stops there, at a huge cliffhanger. Sigh, I really can't wait for the next book!

I really have not had much time to read or post lately, I apologize! Hope you enjoyed this very long book/author review!

Book review #2- A Time for Dancing

I would say that typically the books we have to read for school are not to my taste. However, this choice proves otherwise. From a list, we had to choose a book to read and then discuss in class. Obviously, I chose A Time for Dancing by Davida Wills Hurwin. I can honestly say that this is one of the saddest books I have ever read. I was crying so hard by the end of it!

This book has alternating chapters between two soulmate best friends, Sam and Julie. They are both ballet dancers, and regular teenage girls. This is until Julie becomes diagnosed with a form of Stage 4 cancer. The book follows Julie's awfully long and hard journey with her battle. Sam is also having a hard time at home, so both of their lives are basically falling apart. Nonetheless, this book is an amazing portrayal of love between friends and family, and how to deal when someone you love is slipping away.

This wasn't my favorite book in the world, I do love depressing stories, but perhaps not so sad! It was still a great read, pretty short! It really touched me. I would recommend this book to anyone who is going through a hard time and wants to stop feeling sorry for themselves, seriously. It makes you thankful for what you have!

Short and sweet post, I know! But I hope you got a vague idea about this book, and I would recommend it!

Perfect- Pretty Little Liars

Welcome to my first book review! Today I bring you Perfect by Sara Shepard. This is the 3rd book in the Pretty Little Liars series. I know what you're thinking- I am just a teenage girl who loves twilight, the clique, and petty series like that. I bet you are hating my blog right now, thinking that I have no real knowledge about anything and I am just a stupid teenage girl. THAT IS NOT THE CASE! I had never watched the show, I still haven't, and a friend persuaded me to try out the series. I was very apprehensive, I thought it would be a stupid series, but I was wrong.

The Pretty Little Liars series follows 4 girls- Aria (the artsy one), Hanna (the popular and self-conscious one), Emily (the insecure swimmer), and Spencer (the overachiever). These girls are all very rich, and lead very privileged lives (which does bug me!). However, this twist on a realistic fiction book is very different from the petty rich girl story. Aria, Hanna, Emily, and Spencer used to be friends, all with the uber-popular girl Ali. Until one day, when Ali disappeared. All of the girls kept many secrets, and now a stalker named "A" is threatening to tell all. The scary part is, A is someone close to the girls. The big mystery in this series is finding out who A is, and finding out who killed Ali.
The third book in the series has the lives of the girls falling apart. Hanna goes from being at the top of the popularity chain to being dumped by her best friend. Emily's secret is revealed by A, making her parents furious with her. Spencer is nominated for a writing award- with the essay that her sister wrote. As usual, the book ends with a party where secrets about Ali's life are uncovered, and people are hurt. It just makes me want to get the next book in the series right away! The main plot change in this book verses the others is that A starts to actually become involved, and take action to start spreading the girls' secrets.
So I really think you should give this series a chance-it may surprise you!

Welcome!

Hey Nonexistant followers! What's up? Since my daily blogging plans never work how I want them to, I decided to make a book review blog instead! My name is Maddie, I'm 15 years old (as of the 3rd, happy birthday to me). I am a total bookworm, if you couldn't tell already. I enjoy most kinds of books, although the majority of reviews here will probably be on quick teenage reads. Unfortunately, I have not had as much book (pleasure) reading time due to the fact that I started high school, and my school is one of the most academically challenging in the USA. Look it up, I don't care! So, I hope you enjoy my reviews, I have a feeling this will be a fun project for all of us. :)
